When building it yourself actually makes sense
Honestly — not every project needs this. Building your own is the right call if:
- You’re validating an idea with no real users yet, and don’t need production-hardened auth or billing until you know the product works.
- You have zero users in the EU, California, or India, and genuinely don’t need GDPR/CCPA/DPDPA data-subject rights.
- Your team has already built this exact stack before and has spare capacity to do it again.
- You have effectively unlimited time and no budget at all — the trade is real, and time is a legitimate currency too.

How long does it really take to build production-grade auth from scratch?
For a real product — not a tutorial — budget for email/password with proper hashing and lockout, email verification, password reset, session management, and OAuth for at least Google, GitHub, and Microsoft: roughly 40 hours for an experienced backend engineer, more if it is your first time implementing OAuth correctly. That is before MFA or SSO.
Do I actually need GDPR/CCPA/DPDPA compliance for a new SaaS?
If you will have any users in the EU, California, or India, yes — these are legal requirements, not optional polish. GDPR and DPDPA both require real data-subject rights (export, erasure, consent tracking), not just a privacy policy. Building this properly runs 25+ hours of engineering time on top of whatever legal review you need.
Is a managed auth service (like Clerk or Auth0) cheaper than building it myself?
